Arrival in Khersones. Four years ago, I drawn the bank (up right in the picture) ; since that time, nothing has changed : the same trees, the same boats at the same place. So I decide to draw the opposite bank [cfr ’Ukrainian diary’].
ARRIVÉE À KHERSON. QUATRE ANS PLUS TÔT, J’AVAIS DESSINÉ UNE DES RIVES (EN HAUT À DROITE SUR L’IMAGE) ET, DEPUIS, RIEN N’A CHANGÉ : LES MÊMES ARBRES, LES MÊMES BATEAUX AU MÊME ENDROIT. ALORS JE DESSINE LA BERGE OPPOSÉE (VOIR "CARNET UKRAINIEN").
Sept. 29. Last time, I tried to go in the pilot cabin to make a drawing, but it could not be possible. I asked Vita and Natasha, from the organising comitee, if it was possible this time. The day after, they told me that I could go there if I pretend to be a journalist. I could draw the very moment when the boat was entering Sebastopol : delighting !
29 SEPT. LA DERNIÉRE FOIS, J’AVAIS TENTÉ D’ACCÉDER À LA CABINE DE PILOTAGE, MAIS ÇA N’AVAIT PAS PU SE FAIRE, J’AI DEMANDÉ À VITA ET NATASHA, DU COMITÉ D’ORGANISATION, SI C’ÉTAIT POSSIBLE CETTE FOIS-CI. LE JOUR SUIVANT, ELLES M’ONT DIT QUE JE POUVAIS Y ALLER, SI JE ME FAISAIS PASSER POUR JOURNALISTE. J’Y FUS GENTIMENT ACCEUILLI AU MOMENT OÚ LE BATEAU ENTRAIT DANS LE PORT DE SÉBASTOPOL : MAGIQUE !
This guy in the pilot cabin, that looks like Captain Birdseye IS the captain actually !
ET CE TYPE AVEC SON AIR DE CAPITAINE HADDOCK, C’EST LE CAPITAINE JUSTEMENT !
The traditionnal brass band (of the russian marine) welcoming us at the arrival in Sebastopol. Last time, I had more time to draw them, so I put it in the corner [cfr ’Ukrainian diary’]. At the arrival in Sebastopol, there were no wine, nor beer, nor alcohol anymore in the bars of the boat and they didn’t want to renew the stock because it was the last boat trip of the season. So many people went to the market to make some supplies.
LA FANFARE DE LA MARINE RUSSE QUI NOUS ACCUEILLE TRADITIONNELLEMENT À NOTRE ARRIVÉE À SÉBASTOPOL. LA DERNIÈRE FOIS, J’AI EU PLUS DE TEMPS POUR LES DESSINER (JE REMETS LE DESSIN DANS UN COIN). À CE MOMENT-LÀ DE LA CROISIÈRE, IL NE SUBSISTAIT PLUS DE VIN, DE BIÈRE OU D’ALCOOL DANS LES BARS DU BATEAU ET ILS N’AVAIENT PAS L’INTENTION DE RENOUVELER LE STOCK CAR LE BATEAU EFFECTUAIT LE DERNIER VOYAGE DE LA SAISON. LES FESTIVALIERS SE SONT DONC RUÉS DANS LES SUPERMARCHÉS DE LA VILLE.
I go back to see the beautiful Bakhchisaray Muslim palace (last time I was quite sick, I couldn’t really enjoy the excursion).
JE RETOURNE VOIR LE TRÈS BEAU PALAIS MUSULMAN DE BAKHCHISARAY (LA DERNIÈRE FOIS, J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET JE N’AI PAS PU PROFITER DE LA VISITE).
Suresh and the guide in Bakhchisaray. Up left : a portrait of myself by Suresh.
SURESH ET LA GUIDE. EN HAUT À GAUCHE, UN PORTRAIT DE MOI PAR SURESH.
Carnival ! Everyone prepared a costume, a sketch or a song. A jury will vote for the best shows. I was involved in a sketch with Udo, Émilie and Daniel Šuljić, filmmaker from Croatia. It was the wedding between an animator and Sponge Bob. I was Sponge Bob !
LA SOIRÉE «  CARNIVAL  ». CHACUN A PRÉPARÉ UN SKETCH OU UNE CHANSON. UN JURY DÉSIGNERA LA MEILLEURE PERFORMANCE. JE FUS ENRÔLÉ POUR UN SKETCH AVEC UDO, ÉMILIE ET DANIEL Å ULJIĆ, RÉALISATEUR CROATE ET DIRECTEUR ARTISTIQUE DU FESTIVAL DE ZAGREB. NOUS METTIONS EN SCÈNE UN MARIAGE ENTRE UNE ANIMATRICE ET BOB L’ÉPONGE ET J’ÉTAIS BOB L’ÉPONGE !
I wrote a sketch with Nancy Phelps about a selection comitee. The main difficulty was writing a text with english and russian dialogues so that everyone could understand. We enlisted, besides us, the french director Leo Verrier, the spanish director Pedro Rivero, Vita and the russian director Alexey Alekseev (this last one was in competition with the most hilarious films of the festival and won a prize for it)
J’AI ÉCRIS UN SKETCH AVEC NANCY PHELPS SUR UN COMITÉ DE SÉLECTION. LA PRINCIPALE DIFFICULTÉ FUT D’INTÉGRER LA TRADUCTION RUSSE DANS LE TEXTE DE SORTE QUE TOUT LE MONDE PUISSE COMPRENDRE. NOUS AVONS ENGAGÉ LE RÉALISATEUR ESPAGNOL PEDRO RIVERO, VITA ET LE RÉALISATEUR RUSSE ALEXEY ALEKSEà EV (CE DERNIER ÉTAIT EN COMPÉTITION AVEC LE FILM LE PLUS DRÔLE DU FESTIAL ET ReÇUT UN PRIX POUR LE FILM LE PLUS DRÔLE).
The president of the festival, David Cherkassky, with Yuri Norstein, playing a remake of the famous Norstein’s film ’The Hedgehog in the fog’ and replacing the tea and the raspberry jam of the last scene, when the bear and the hedgehog meet at the end, by vodka and cigarettes. Actually, before making the ’Selection comitee’ sketch, one of my first idea was also a sketch based upon ’The hedgehog in the fog’. When I told that to Norstein after the party, he told me ’You should have done it too !’
LE PRÉSIDENT DU FESTIVAL, DAVID CHERKASSY, AVEC YOURI NORSTEIN, REJOUE LE CÉLÈBRE CLASSIQUE DE NORSTEIN, “LE HÉRISSON DANS LE BROUILLARD†, REMPLAÇANT LE THÉ ET LA CONFITURE DE FRAMBOISE DE LA DERNIÈRE SCÈNE, PAR DE LA VODKA ET DES CIGARETTES. EN FAIT, AVANT D’IMAGINER ÉCRIRE LE SKETCH SUR LE COMITÉ DE SÉLECTION, J’AVAIS AUSSI EU L’IDÉE DE REJOUER “LE HÉRISSON DANS LE BROUILLARD†. QUAND JE L’AI DIT À NORSTEIN, IL ME RÉPONDIT “VOUS AURIEZ DÛ LE FAIRE AUSSI !â€
The biggest surprise of the Carnival party came from Ange and his friends, Noémie, Carl and Sam. They came on the stage wearing refuse bag, with a hole at the level of the belly where they had drawn à face, and pasted a rope by way of moustaches. They begun to sing and dance by pressing the belly to animate the faces. Then they went away. Sam came back alone, without the costume, and started to improvise and play a kind of ringmaster in order to introduce one of the biggest show ever seen : FLIP MAN !...
LA PLUS GRANDE SURPRISE DE CE DÉFILÉ DE SKETCHES NOUS ÉTAIT RÉSERVÉE PAR ANGE ET SES COMPARSES, NOÉMIE, CARL ET SAM. ILS VINRENT SUR SCÈNE AVEC UN SAC POUBELLE TROUÉ SUR EUX, LAISSANT APPARAÎTRE LEUR VENTRE. UNE CORDE PASSAIT D’UN PERSONNAGE À L’AUTRE DESSINANT UNE MOUSTACHE SUR DES VISAGES PEINTS À MÊME LE VENTRE. ILS ONT ENTAMÉ UNE DANSE EN PRESSANT LEUR VENTRE POUR ANIMER LES VISAGES. ILS SE SONT ENSUITE RETIRÉ ET SAM EST REVENU, DÉBARRASSÉ DE SON COSTUM, POUR JOUER UNE SORTE DE BONIMENTEUR POUR INTRODUIRE LA PLUS INCROYABLE DES PERFORMANCE : FLIP MAN !...
Then Ange, disguised as a kind of wrestler and covered by a blanket, entered, assisted by Carl and Noémie. With a great sense of mise-en-scène, they made us waiting a little bit to maintain the suspens. Suddenly, Ange got rid of his blanket, and started to tear his 7 drawn T-shirts, one after another, to let us discover an incredible animation. With a so impressive show, they naturally won the best prize from the Carnival jury !
ANGE EST ALORS APPARU, PORTANT DES LUNETTES NOIRES ET RECOUVERT D’UNE COUVERTURE, À LA MANIÈRE D’UN CATCHEUR, ASSISTÉ DE CARL ET NOÉMIE. APRÉS UN SUSPENS SAVAMMENT ENTRETENU, ANGE A SOUDAIN ABANDONNÉ SA COUVERTURE, LAISSANT APPARAÎTRE SON TORSE RECOUVERT DE SEPT T-SHIRTS. IL A ENSUITE DÉCHIRÉ SES T-SHIRTS, L’UN APRÈS L’AUTRE, ENCHAÎNANT LES SEPT DESSINS RÉALISÉS SUR LES T-SHIRTS ET CRÉANT UNE ANIMATION ORIGINALE. INUTILE DE DIRE QU’ILS ONT GAGNÉS LE PREMIER PRIX DE LA SOIRÉE !
Sept. 30. The Princess Dniepra in Sebastopol.
30 SEPT. LE “PRINCESS DNIEPRA†ANCRÉ À SEBASTOPOL.
I went back to Khersones ruins as I did four years ago [cfr ’Ukrainian diary’]. Last time, we did not have any explanation about this ancient greek city on the Black Sea. This time, a guide (picture) gave us all necessary explanations.
JE SUIS RETOURNÉ SUR LE SITE DES RUINES DE KHERSON COMME QUATRE ANS AUPARAVANT, SAUF QUE LA DERNIÈRE FOIS NOUS N’AVIONS EU AUCUNE EXPLICATION SUR CETTE ANTIQUE CITÉ ANTIQUE GRECQUE DU POURTOUR DE LA MER NOIRE. CETTE FOIS-CI, UNE CHARMANTE GUIDE (IMAGE) NOUS DONNA TOUTES LES EXPLICATIONS NÉCESSAIRES.
In the ruins, Sayoko Kinoshita, director of the Hiroshima animation film festival, who invited me in her festival in 1998.
DANS LES RUINES, SAYOKO KINOSHITA, DIRECTRICE DE FESTIVAL DE CINÉMA D’ANIMATION D’HIROSHIMA, QUI M’Y INVITA EN 1998.
In this diary, we never see the countershot of the scenes I’m drawing : I made this sketch of myself after a picture Udo took in Khersones, when I was drawing Sayoko.
DANS UN CARNET DESSINÉ, ON N’A JAMAIS L’OCCASION DE VOIR LE CONTRE-CHAMPS : J’AI FAIT CE CROQUIS À PARTIR D’UNE PHOTO PRISE PAR UDO QUAND JE DESSINAIS SAYOKO.
Time for closing ceremony in the ’Moscow’ theater of Sebastopol. We gently feel the ’after festival blues’ rising.
C’EST DÉJÀ LE MOMENT DE LA CÉRÉMONIE DE CLÔTURE AU CINÉMA «  MOSCOW  » À SÉBASTOPOL. NOUS SENTONS DOUCEMENT MONTER L’ «  AFTER-FESTIVAL BLUES  ».Â

Oct. 1. Argentinian director Juan Pablo Zaramella drawing in the Panorama bar.
1ER OCT. LE RÉALISATEUR ARGENTIN JUAN PABLO ZARAMELA DESSINANT DANS LE PANORAMA BAR.
American producer Max Howard giving a masterclass about ’Creating An Effective Story and How To Pitch It’. For example, he spoked about the distribution of an animated feature film. He taught us what the word ’toyetic’ means : it is the amount of toys that a film can generate (the most ’toyetic’ film for the moment is ’Cars’ by john Lasseter). At a moment, he had this feeling that it was a bit absurd to speak about film merchandising in fast food in front of an audience mainly composed of animated short film artists.
LE PRODUCTEUR AMÉRICAIN MAX HOWARD PRODIGUANT SES CONSEILS LORS D’UNE MASTER-CLASS DANS LE “SKY BAR†, INTITULÉE “CREATING AN EFFECTIVE STORY AND HOW TO PITCH IT†. IL NOUS ENTRETIENT,PAR EXEMPLE, DE LADISTRIBUTION DES LONGS MÉTRAGES ET NOUS APPREND LE SENS DU MOT “TOYETIC†, QUI DÉSIGNE LE POTENTIEL D’UN FILM EN TERME DE DÉCLINAISON SOUS FORME DE JOUETS (LE FILM LE ¨PLUS “TOYETIC†À CE JOUR EST “CARS†DE JOHN LASSETER). À UN MOMENT DONNÉ, IL S’EST INTERROMPU POUR NOUS FAIRE PART DE L’ÉTRANGE IMPRESSION QU’IL RESSENTAIT À DÉCRIRE LES STRATÉGIES MARKETING CONSISTANT À METTRE SUR PIED DES PARTENARIATS AVEC DES FAST FOOD POUR PROMOUVOIR DES FILMS, DEVANT UN PARTERRE CONSTITUÉ DE RÉALISATEURS DE FILMS D’AUTEUR.
Back to reality. Remembering already all the good times we had : speaking with a lot of directors and animators, meeting directors of whom we’re admiring the work (but never tell them of course), and, above all, meeting nice people, who don’t care about cultural differences or nationality.
RETOUR À LA RÉALITÉ : ON REPENSE DÉJÀ AUX MOMENTS PASSÉS SUR LE BATEAU, À DISCUTER AVEC TOUS CES ANIMATEURS, AVEC DES RÉALISATEURS QU’ON ADMIRE (SANS LE LEUR DIRE BIEN ENTENDU) ET SURTOUT, EN RENCONTRANT DES GENS EXCEPTIONNELS, QUI FONT FI DES BARRIÈRES CULTURELLES OU NATIONALES.
