Sept. 24, 5 am. Train to Brussels airport. Two films were selected by the festival : the first is ’Poodle’ by directors Noémie Marsily & Carl Roosens, the second is ’Kill the surfers’ by the ’Atelier Collectif’ (Collective workshop), which I coordinated and which is based on a song by Ghinzu.

Transit in Stuttgart. This airport is really huge : more than half an hour to walk from one gate to another one.

Flight to Kiev. This time the boat is starting from Kiev and ending in Odessa, so the exact opposite of the last trip [cfr ’Ukrainian diary’].

On the stage, the vocal group Zvuchi Dochi, which will regularly animate the travel and the ceremonies. Some of them are animators.

Sept. 25. We visit Kiev : Church service at the Pecherska Lavra monastery of Kiev, the three monks on the right side had a beautiful vocal harmony.

Sept. 26. Dutch director Udo Prinsen (’Audition’) reading on the deck a book about the antartic expedition at the time of Amundsen. This guy was also my roommate, a incredibly funny one. He was also a very careful roommate, bringing back to the room my bag which i forgot every night and where this sketchbook was. Without him, you wouldn’t read this diary.

Sept. 29. Last time, I tried to go in the pilot cabin to make a drawing, but it could not be possible. I asked Vita and Natasha, from the organising comitee, if it was possible this time. The day after, they told me that I could go there if I pretend to be a journalist. I could draw the very moment when the boat was entering Sebastopol : delighting !

The traditionnal brass band (of the russian marine) welcoming us at the arrival in Sebastopol. Last time, I had more time to draw them, so I put it in the corner [cfr ’Ukrainian diary’]. At the arrival in Sebastopol, there were no wine, nor beer, nor alcohol anymore in the bars of the boat and they didn’t want to renew the stock because it was the last boat trip of the season. So many people went to the market to make some supplies.

I go back to see the beautiful Bakhchisaray Muslim palace (last time I was quite sick, I couldn’t really enjoy the excursion).

Carnival ! Everyone prepared a costume, a sketch or a song. A jury will vote for the best shows. I was involved in a sketch with Udo, Émilie and Daniel Šuljić, filmmaker from Croatia. It was the wedding between an animator and Sponge Bob. I was Sponge Bob !
LA SOIRÉE « CARNIVAL ». CHACUN A PRÉPARÉ UN SKETCH OU UNE CHANSON. UN JURY DÉSIGNERA LA MEILLEURE PERFORMANCE. JE FUS ENRÔLÉ POUR UN SKETCH AVEC UDO, ÉMILIE ET DANIEL ŠULJIĆ, RÉALISATEUR CROATE ET DIRECTEUR ARTISTIQUE DU FESTIVAL DE ZAGREB. NOUS METTIONS EN SCÈNE UN MARIAGE ENTRE UNE ANIMATRICE ET BOB L’ÉPONGE ET J’ÉTAIS BOB L’ÉPONGE !
I wrote a sketch with Nancy Phelps about a selection comitee. The main difficulty was writing a text with english and russian dialogues so that everyone could understand. We enlisted, besides us, the french director Leo Verrier, the spanish director Pedro Rivero, Vita and the russian director Alexey Alekseev (this last one was in competition with the most hilarious films of the festival and won a prize for it)

The president of the festival, David Cherkassky, with Yuri Norstein, playing a remake of the famous Norstein’s film ’The Hedgehog in the fog’ and replacing the tea and the raspberry jam of the last scene, when the bear and the hedgehog meet at the end, by vodka and cigarettes. Actually, before making the ’Selection comitee’ sketch, one of my first idea was also a sketch based upon ’The hedgehog in the fog’. When I told that to Norstein after the party, he told me ’You should have done it too !’

The biggest surprise of the Carnival party came from Ange and his friends, Noémie, Carl and Sam. They came on the stage wearing refuse bag, with a hole at the level of the belly where they had drawn à face, and pasted a rope by way of moustaches. They begun to sing and dance by pressing the belly to animate the faces. Then they went away. Sam came back alone, without the costume, and started to improvise and play a kind of ringmaster in order to introduce one of the biggest show ever seen : FLIP MAN !...
LA PLUS GRANDE SURPRISE DE CE DÉFILÉ DE SKETCHES NOUS ÉTAIT RÉSERVÉE PAR ANGE ET SES COMPARSES, NOÉMIE, CARL ET SAM. ILS VINRENT SUR SCÈNE AVEC UN SAC POUBELLE TROUÉ SUR EUX, LAISSANT APPARAÎTRE LEUR VENTRE. Then Ange, disguised as a kind of wrestler and covered by a blanket, entered, assisted by Carl and Noémie. With a great sense of mise-en-scène, they made us waiting a little bit to maintain the suspens. Suddenly, Ange got rid of his blanket, and started to tear his 7 drawn T-shirts, one after another, to let us discover an incredible animation. With a so impressive show, they naturally won the best prize from the Carnival jury !

American producer Max Howard giving a masterclass about ’Creating An Effective Story and How To Pitch It’. For example, he spoked about the distribution of an animated feature film. He taught us what the word ’toyetic’ means : it is the amount of toys that a film can generate (the most ’toyetic’ film for the moment is ’Cars’ by john Lasseter). At a moment, he had this feeling that it was a bit absurd to speak about film merchandising in fast food in front of an audience mainly composed of animated short film artists.
